Saturday Style Icons: 02 Brigitte Bardot

Last Saturday, I started my new 'Saturday Style Icons' and began with Audrey Hepburn. This was a success and you seemed to like it so I couldn't wait to share with you my next icon, Brigitte Bardot.

Brigitte Bardot was born in 1934 in Paris and as a child was encouraged by her mother to take up music and dance which Bardot was very good at. When she was 15, Bardot was trying to develop a modelling career and ended up being featured in French magazine, Elle. As she was now becoming a successful model, she wanted to try her luck on the screen and debuted in Crazy for Love (1952).

Brigitte continued to appear in French films, but also made American productions and created quite a stir with her beautiful kitten like features. The USA were fascinated with her and she featured in many more magazines and films.

However, all this fame comes with its drawbacks as she was often hounded by the paparazzi and fans would try to enter her home. In 1973, just before she turned 40, Bardot retired. She said that retiring was "a way to get out elegantly". Once she retired, she become involved in animal rights and started the "Foundation Brigitte Bardot" for the welfare of animals.

Brigitte is a style icon because she created the off-the-shoulder Bardot neckline, popularised the bikini and made gingham stylish. Her style screams Parisian chic and you could often find her wearing a breton top (my favourite) with a pair of peddle pushers or capri pants - She knew how to show off her curves. I would say her style was definitely flirty.

Saturday Style Icons: 01 Audrey Hepburn

I want to start by doing a weekly post on one of my style icons! For the very first post, I thought that I would have to start off with the legendary Audrey Hepburn. I often find myself looking into the past for inspiration as I am a big fan of anything vintage or retro looking.

Audrey Hepburn was born in Belgium in 1926, but soon traveled to England to study in London. She then returned to the Netherlands during the war and fell ill with malnutrition and depression. After that she ventured to London again to ballet school and began to model. It wasn't long before she found a career in film and moved to America. Such a jet-setter!

She appeared in many films during the 1950s and 60s such as Roman Holiday (1953), Love in the Afternoon (1957) and my favourite, Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961). She decided to retire from Hollywood at the end of the 60s and worked for UNICEF.

She's a style icon to me because of the little black dress by Givenchy which she wore in Breakfast at Tiffany's which is now one of the most famous dresses of all time. Her wardrobe was full with lots of fashion staples such as breton tops and pencil dresses and skirts. She always would be confident in the clothes she wore, even if they were men's clothing! Not only were her clothes stylish, but her short haircut showed off her big eyes which she enhanced with eyeliner and mascara. She could always give a feminine twist with her makeup.

Golden Shoes

The other day I went for a winter walk, which I thought was a great idea to get some fresh air and to walk off all that chocolate I ate over Christmas, but it rained and it rained. All day. Never the less, I had a great day with my boyfriend and got to show off my new shoes.

I have wanted some brogues for ages as I really believe they're a timeless classic and last year my sister bought a pair like these and I immediately fell in love with them! Through my sister purchasing Grenson, I found my golden ones and I knew I had to have a  pair and bought them with my Christmas money.

They're so different and I think that's why I like them so much, I haven't seen many other metallic brogues around. The rubber wedge sole on them is quite thick and makes me about an inch taller. At least I know I'm not going to wear any holes in them anytime soon.

I must admit that I am a bit of a magpie and I'm attracted to anything that sparkles. These are so shiny you can see your reflection! At least my Granddad can't say I'm scruffy anymore (not that I ever was).

I'm really pleased that I got these shoes from Grenson! They were quite expensive for my pocket, but the quality of them is excellent and these will last me for a long time and you must always treat yourself to something luxurious once in a while.

Favourite Things: Duck Egg Blues

My favourite colour at the moment is duck egg blue! It's such a cute colour and reminds me of vintage and shabby chic style too. I think it's serene and helps me to relax (that's why my bedroom is painted this colour).

I love the enamel ring by Astley Clarke (in fact, I love all of his jewellery). It's so stylish and something a bit different to a plain gold band. Also, you can create your very own ring stack and customise it to however you like. This is on my wish list.

Not forgetting the feather tray by Ary Trays who handcraft trays using birch wood. I think the feathers are beautiful in their own right and the illustration featured on the tray really make it a great piece. It's literally following the duck egg theme.

Favourite Finds: Earrings

Today I've been on the hunt for some more earrings! I love earrings, they're my favourite type of jewellery and there are so many quirky designs out there. Here are some of the best ones I came across:

I love the Cherub Swing Earrings by Bill Skinner he designs some amazing jewellery. I would definitely look at more of his products if you like the earrings I featured in this post.

You can probably tell I'm a fan of drop earrings! I think they're flattering and make a bold statement (depending on how unusual or big they are). Although, if you're going to chose eye catching earrings, I'd stick to less hair accessories or a smaller necklace. Last time I wore big earrings with a big necklace, my sister wouldn't stop calling me 'bling bling'... and let me tell you it was only funny the first time!

Kitty Flats and Knockoffs!

I'm sure we're all aware of Charlotte Olympia's gorgeous shoes! I'm especially in love with her kitty flats. I'd love to have a pair, but at £465 a pair... It's a bit out of my price range! That's why I've been on the lookout for alternatives!

£495? I best save up my pennies up.

I think that 2. is the best match! These are $42.42, so not very expensive either. The only problem I am having is finding shoes in my size. I'm a UK size 8 in shoes so that's quite big (but not uncommon). Let me know if you know anywhere else which has kitty shoes in my size!

Use Shopcade!

Recently, thanks to the E-TailPR bloggers network, I have found out about Shopcade! Shopcade is a website a little like Pinterest, but it's all about shopping! Oh my gosh! I wish I didn't have such expensive taste, but I think these skirts are beautiful (and there a lot of similar ones on sites like ASOS). However, I see them more as inspiration because I'm definitely in love with the pencil skirt at the moment. They can be very flattering and can be dressed up or dressed down!

Trains Zip Bag

 

Oh I have been so busy lately, you wouldn't believe it! That's why I haven't had chance to post anything new in a while until today. I've been getting ready for university as well as completing deadlines. I can't wait until Summer, I need a break.

Anyway, I was recently treated to a lovely Cath Kidston bag. It's in the quirky trains print (one of my favourite prints by Cath Kidston) and it's very spacious! I am able to carry lots of A4 books and anything I'd possibly need when going out to college or shopping.

It's got a zip fastening to keep everything inside safe and there is an inside pocket to keep your smaller bits and bobs safe! The shoulder strap is lovely and long, perfect to put over your shoulder.

If you're looking for a bag which will catch other peoples' attention and will gain a lot of interest then this is the bag you need! I think it's because of the train pattern, it's retro, cute and different.
